Repairing an OT-64 armoured personnel carrier.
OT-64 SKOT is the collectors first choice in large 8x8 APCs (as compared to the BRDM among the 4x4 ones). Why? Firstly – they are still available in large amounts the purchasing price thus being quite low. Secondly, its engine is almost the same as in the Tatra 138 – still largely in use – thus the spares are cheap and accessible. Thirdly, its rear door and the opening roof make it the easiest to access APC.
The majority of OT-64 was produced in the 70's. Still, the chassis is practically a copy of a German war model. The legendary air-driven Wilson gear-box, durable and making the driving comfortable - dates even before the war (made under a Rolls-Royce licence from the 30's). Thus, logically, some spares has to be manufactured.
The Polish armour does by no mean fit the requirements of a modern armouring. Not fulfilling even "class 2" of the STANAG-4569 scale it is not considered weapon in Germany.
As concerns floating, given their age, we generally do not command our clients to swim with their OT-64. Still the floating propellers are working. If required we can change the the chassis man rubber parts that have to be manufactured.
Most of the vehicles MORTAR have almost zero mileage yet they have been standing outside for a long time. This makes the overhaul specific.
The are about 500 hours of works to be conducted at each OT-64. A fully repaired vehicle without a turret costs roughly 12.000 euros. A turret is roughly 2.000 extra. Vehicles with no paint cost 2.000 euros less. All pricing without VAT.
First of all, the engine is taken out and the vehicle is sand-blasted.
The basic paint is applied.
Even on the OT-64 the might be some welding to be done - yet an argon super strong welder is to be used.
The engine out, an occasion to fix the "oil economy" (the oil tank, pump, lines and gaskets) is at hand.
Same for the air system.
.
And the clutch - the valve has to be given new.
In between the air-cooled Tatra engine is taken out. Fully dissembled, brushed, polished, re-sealed. The insets and many other parts have to be changed for new ones.
The whole engine is soda-blasted and newly painted.
Then put back in.
The hardest job comes with the wheel part. They have to be taken apart completely
Often the wheel bearing have to be changed. Always for the the O-rings.
At last, it's really a lot of bearings, seals and O-rings changed - this is a sum of one vehicle.
All hoses have to be changed.
The brake shoes have to be de-greased and polished.
The brake cylinders have to be re-sealed and often brushed with a milling cutter. In such a case new valves have to be lathed.
A major task is the central tyre-inflation system (CTIS). The O-rings have to manufactured.
All fixed, the wheel can be assembled again.
On the chassis, the differential locks are re-sealed.
Wheel part ready, time to fix all the small matters: door seals, air lines, periscopes, wipers, electricity.
CTIS covers- always stolen - have to be manufactured.
Now we can paint the inside.
Gearbox and differential repaired, it is time to do the final paint and the vehicle can leave. Normally, we leave the used tyres on - they are not used but old and a bit mouldered - this can be generally fixed by the CTIS.
